Messages from Dad as If He was Here

Posted on May 14, 2014 in Family

About 3 years ago, I asked Dad if I could interview him on camera.  He said yes but on one condition; and that was that he could get the list of questions that I wanted to ask him so he could prepare.

He prepared for weeks and finally he was ready.  I told him to come to my house that night.  He showed up in a suit and told me that he was so happy that he told all his friends he was coming to his sons house to do an interview.

For 3 hours or so I asked him questions but for the first hour it was difficult.  Every time I would ask him a question, he would read his prepared answers off the paper.  It took about an hour for me to finally get him comfortable enough to just talk to me and when he did, he had lots to say.

This is a video with just about 20 minutes of those conversations. Unfortunately, over the years some of the videos got corrupted and they became pixelated.  I guess that was ok, since what I really wanted was the audio anyway.    I thought it was the right time to play some of those tapes so I got video messages from many of his kids and grandkids.

This is some of those messages from dad.

In My Life

Posted on May 11, 2014 in Family

On Saint Patrick’s Day this year, we all headed down to my Dad’s house for a party.  Mom cooked Corn Beef and Cabbage (one of his favorites) and we even got him a Guinness Beer.  It was a real Irish party.

We knew something was wrong earlier that week but at the time we didn’t understand how wrong it would turn out to be.    This was one of the last times he ever ate a meal and the last time he had a sip of his favorite beer.  Looking back at that night, I realize now it was a celebration of him and what was most important to him – family.

This video is a tribute to his life – a way of looking back from that celebretory night- to his childhood – then moving to California – starting a family – having 12 kids and then 24 grandkids.    His life centered around one thing – his family -and you can see exactly that in everything he did.

Good Job Dad.

Dad Got’s Me With The Water

Posted on May 3, 2014 in Family

It was fun.  We were playing in the backyard spraying each other with the hose on one of the hottest days I can remember in a long, long time.

Greg say’s, “Hey do you guys remember this trick?”, as he crimps the hose making the water stop. Then he say’s, “Hey Darla, what happened to the water?”.    Darla, stops looks in the hose and then….

Two of us

Posted on May 2, 2014 in Family

Two of us riding nowhere
Spending someone’s
Hard earned pay
You and me Sunday driving

Not arriving
On our way back home
We’re on our way home
We’re on our way home
We’re going home

ollieandmetrashYou and I have memories
Longer than the road that stretches out ahead

Two of us wearing raincoats
Standing so low
In the sun
You and me chasing paper
Getting nowhere
On our way back home
We’re on our way home
We’re on our way home
We’re going home
